A new concept in primary school education, this book is written for teachers who would like to include music in their classroom program but do not necessarily have a background in music or music performance. Designed for students in their first year of school, the book provide dozens of teaching ideas that link musical concepts with Key Learning Areas, such as Math, Science, and Studies of Society and Environment as well as the other Arts strands of Drama, Dance and Visual Arts.
MusicTime! Let's Begin consists of 20 Quick Activities (5-20 minutes) and 10 Units with themes that include 'All Kinds of Weather', 'Here comes the Postman' and 'Four Flapping Flamingos'. A topic such as Birthdays involves students in drawing a cake (Visual Arts), counting candles (Mathematics) and 'playing' the layers of cake through graphic notation (Music). Songs about the weather provide musical experiences but also activities on features of weather (Science), safety issues (Health and Physical Education) and outdoor games (Dance/movement).
Ten Extension Ideas are also provided for teachers who have some knowledge of music.

About the author
Dr Ros McMillan is one of Australia's foremost music educators. She has over 45 years experience teaching at all levels, from group lessons with three year olds as the first Australian Yamaha teacher, to classes of Year 8 boys, to adult workshops. As head of Music Education at the University of Melbourne, where she taught for 20 years, she trained generalist primary teachers and specialist secondary teachers in classroom music method. Her graduates are now in schools throughout the world and her curriculum materials are widely used throughout Australia.
